Women's Safety, Skills & Strength Project
Creating safe spaces, building confidence, strengthening communities. We believe that every woman deserves to feel safe, valued and supported within her community.
Over the past year, with funding from West Yorkshire Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund through the West Yorkshire Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, we have delivered our Women’s Safety, Skills & Strength Project, bringing together women from across the local area to take part in a range of creative, wellbeing and confidence-building activities. From self-defence and mindfulness sessions to craft workshops, singing, styling events and opportunities to simply connect with others, the project created welcoming spaces where women could focus on themselves, build friendships and develop new skills. A total of 194 women took part, with many sessions fully booked and waiting lists for activities throughout the programme.
While the activities themselves were important, the project was about much more than learning a new skill. It was about creating safe, supportive environments where women could build confidence, reduce isolation and access information about staying safe and where to find support if they ever need it.
Working alongside partners including The Women’s Centre and Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership, we were able to share valuable information about domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, healthy relationships and the support services available locally.
The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with women telling us they felt welcomed, safe, connected and supported through the programme.
Watch our Community Awareness Video…
As part of the project, we worked with local people to create a short video exploring women’s experiences of safety in their communities.
The film shares real perspectives from local residents and encourages positive conversations about respect, personal safety and the role that we can all play in helping women and girls feel safer. It is a reminder that creating safer communities is everyone’s responsibility.
We encourage you to watch, share and help keep the conversation going.
